ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY
2D and M MODE IMAGING - Two-dimensional echo or B mode allow us to demonstrate
the spatial relationship of structure for more accurate anatomic diagnosis of
abnormalities of the heart and great vessels. It provides
the tomographic images of the heart.
It displays the return echoes as
dots of varying brightness
The brightness of
the dot represents the strength of
the return echo
It provides
the tomographic images of
the heart by directing the transducer in various
planes. Indications for 2 D echo are increasing with their increasing
diagnostic accuracy. Some of these are to screen newborns and small infants who
appear to have cardiac defects, to rule out cyanotic congenital heart disease
in newborns with clinical findings of PPHN and persistent fetal circulation
syndrome, to diagnose PDA or other heart defects or ventricular dysfunction in
a premature infant who is on a ventilator for pulmonary disease, To confirm the
diagnosis in infants and children with atypical findings of certain defects.
M Mode is
used in the instance when documentation of the movement of the reflector is
needed, such as looking at the motion of a heart valve or
myocardial wall thickness during systole and diastole
M mode is often
used in obstetrics and cardiac applications. With m
mode imaging the motion of reflectors along
a single scan line is analyzed, The m mode tracing is one scan
line represented over time with depth along the y-axis and time along the
x-axis
This is sometimes
referred to as ice-pick imaging because of the
very narrow field of view.M mode echo helpful in the
detection of pericardial fluid, left ventricular systolic function,
Study of the motion of the cardiac valve, for example, M V P, mitral stenosis
and dimension of cardiac chambers and vessels, the thickness of
interventricular septum and free walls

aortic valve level
