SINUS ARRHYTHMIA-HEART AND TECHY-ECG CHANGES

What is meant by sinus arrhythmia, what are the ecg changes associated with sinus arrhythmia..before going to that you have to know what is meant by normal sinus rhythm?





......These are the criteria for diagnosing normal sinus rhythm ...........

  • A regular rhythm at a rate of 60 to 100 beats per minute
  • Each p wave is followed by a qrs complex
  • P wave will be upright in leads II, III, a v f and lead 1 and a v l, negative in a v r and biphasic in v 1

so these are the criteria for diagnosing a sinus rhythm from an ecg. 

Coming to sinus arrhythmia it is a normal physiological response usually. In ecg, you can alternate slow and rapid rates. This condition usually occurs due to the variation respiration so this arrhythmia is also known as respiratory sinus arrhythmia

The rate will be faster at the end of inspiration and slower will be the end of expiration. This mechanism is mediated by vagus nerve from receptors in the lungs. How you can diagnose it from an ecg? this is an example for sinus arrhythmia

you can see here PP interval is varying because of changes in respiration. But other components in ecg are normal because the conduction is occurring in normally, there is no any disturbance in conduction through conduction system,

only respiration is causing the changes. So how you can terminate this arrhythmia? I had already told you this is a physiological phenomenon but during digitalis administration, sinus arrhythmia is observed. By doing carotid sinus compression and by giving atropine and amyl nitrate we can terminate this arrhythmia
